Decimal prices in Australia
Most Australian bookmakers display decimal odds. The number already includes your stake in the potential return. Multiply stake by the decimal price to see the maximum return if that selection settles as a winner. A $20 stake at 1.80 returns up to $36 when successful — including the original $20 — which means a $16 profit if the bet wins and a full loss of the stake if it does not.
Fractional or American formats appear less often on local apps, but the underlying idea is the same: the price is a market quote, not a forecast you can force with skill. Two books can show different decimals on the same event because each applies its own margin and liability limits.
Implied probability and the margin
A rough implied chance is 1 divided by the decimal odds. At 2.00 that is about 50%; at 4.00 about 25%. When you add implied chances across all outcomes in a market, the total usually exceeds 100%. The excess is the bookmaker margin. Understanding that overround helps you see why “beating the market” every week is unrealistic for recreational bettors.
Price shopping still matters. A 2.10 instead of a 2.00 on the same selection improves your potential return without changing how the match is played. That improvement does not make the selection more likely to win; it only changes the payout schedule if it does.
